Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Tuesday, December 29,2009--Week 21--Blog 32--Day 137 of 4,014

CELEBRATION!!! CELEBRATION!!! After almost 11..yes ELEVEN months of having the backing of my MONET GARDEN quilt on a design board it is FINISHED..COMPLETED.....

This wall hanging is "big" ....36 x 54 inches...based on a Kaffe Fassett design. The top was completed in a one day class with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably in Hawaii in February, 2009...on a quilt tour. Reference: www.TravelingTogether.net and www.KaffeFassett.com.

and...YES!!! I DID use stash and many many many flower fabric scraps in the backing...that piecing was often boringly time consuming......and..fortunately it looks quite o.k...well really pretty good..considering...

So now after new year..it will go to the "professional" quilter.

Still dangling.....the names of quilts and book references..so that you also can discover this Kaffe Fassett design--I think it is a real winner...and I will use again....and

...learning how to use a digital camera..and the special gizmo that plugs into a computer..so that finally the Quilt/Stash Project-- 2020 quilts can be seen.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!..OF COURSE

Saturday, December 26, 2009 Week 20--Blog 31--Day 134 of 4,014

Finally....Break-through!!!!

I AM quilting again....after ???? how many days..weeks??? it has been frustrating to have this quilting/blogging project put-off and put-off...Sort-of unbelivable that there was not tijme to quilt for so long...

Then.....unexpectly--happily quilitng on December 24-25-and 26........

Yes!!! finally completing a project that has been on the design board since FEBRUARY (2009)_

In February of this year I went with Traveling Together on a quilting tour to Hawaii...and two days of classes with KAFFE FASSETT AND BRANDON MABRY.......it was super great....

I completely the quilt top of a quilt I named MONET GARDEN..based on a Kaffe Fassett design--as with all Kaffe's work.. the piecing is basic-simple..in this case. 3 blocks---9 inch-6 inch-3 inch.
www.TravelingTogether.net......andwww.KaffeFassett.com

HIS genius is in the color....and what I call the geometry....( was hoping to give you a refrence to a particular book and a particular quilt pattern......unfortunately I could not find in my file of Kaffe's patterns--I WILL try-look again).

I am very..very happy with MONET GARDEN....and in FEBRUARY started to finish the backing.

Mistake????well....MAYBE anticipating this Quilt/Stash project-2020 where I am DETERMINED to use all scraps and stash....I decided to use left over blocks from the front ( I had 5-9 inch blocks, maybe 10-6 inch blocks, and an unknown number of 3 inch blocks.

I said why waste..use them...and the scraps and stash of FLOWER FABRIC in my various boxes and drawers....This has meant endless improvising and sewing over almost 10 months now ( of course..often delayed by finishing other quilts--and this project)....

My Happy news today...with focused effort for 2..maybe 3 hours today and tomorrow..that quilt back will be completed...

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION: learn how to use digital camera--and the gizmo technology...so
that pictures can be on this blog.

Enough ......I AM a contented quilter today

Happy New Year thoughts...Determined Quilter.

Saturday, December 19,2009 Week 19--Blog 30--Day 127 of 4,014

Happy Holidays to all..especially my "Followers"

This has been a frustrating 10 days-two weeks..absolutely NO quilting--just a series of boring, mundane life hassles taking time and energy..and focus.....and sort-of at this moment no end in sight.

Back in August (the 14th) when I started the Quilt/Stash Project-2020 and this Blog I delusionally??assumed that I could and WOULD be able to quilt at least 1 hour every day--and maybe even Blog about my progress 6 days a week.

So much for illusions---delusions...

For those of you who have tunned-in--followed...you are aware of this wandering journey the Project and this Blog has taken.

So REALITY...Quilt when LIFE allows; Blog--to report progress...certainly 3,887 days SHOULD be sufficent to complete the job...

My Japanese friends and colleagues have sent a picture of the Buddha which I am framing---and more about that next week...

Again Happy Holidays

REPORT: TRAVELING TOGETHER--JAPAN TOUR--NOVEMBER 6-15, 2009
( www.TravelingTogether.net)

Day 7--Thursday,November 13--Tokyo....
Again...Those intreped, enthuisastic tour-mates went shopping..by local train to the Yuzawaya Kamata Store.....by all reports and "experience"...and I cannot comment..because I did not go--have I really reached an age when "shopping' has lost it's charm???or is it just me???

Afternoon special treat--The near-by Kabuki-Za Theatre--with a traditonal Kabuki drama. That lovely old theatre was completely sold-out at 4;oo on a week day afternoon..and we were there only westeners present....Thanks!! Traveling together.

Day 8--Friday, November 13, Quilt Week-Yokohama---the "reason" for this trip.

Morning: a class--making by hand a traditional little purse.....very o.k....and for me, a nice gift for a special friend...then

Afternoon QUILT SHOW!!! QUILT SHOW!!!!!QUILT SHOW!!!...absolutely gorgeous--fabulous quilts...dare I say that most--90%? would win some prize in any quilt show in the world.. Yes!! I dare....a happy, happy and daunting experience. For your Bucket List (you know: things to-do before I die) Quilt Week-Yokohoma needs serious consideration.

Report: Quilt/Stash Project-2020

One week since last Blog---or quilting time-progress..*&^%$#%$%
..the ordinary, mundane, boring chores of life keep demanding and taking time and attention.

However,..small mission accomplished this morning: the orange-purple flowered fabric purchased last week for the backing of the Pink Fan/Stars Japanese quilt just did NOT work.

So,,new fabric had to be purchased....found at Ben Franklin...deep purple with gold leaves...I hope this is right.

REPORT: TRAVELING TOGETHER-JAPAN TOUR--NOVEMBER 6-15, 2009
( www.TravelingTogether.net)

Day 5-Tuesday, November 10: Train to Takayama-Rain-Hot Springs-Hot Tub- Roykan-Japanese Dinner

Train---Kyoto to Nagoya, then NOT TO BE MISSED...Train--- Nagoya to Takayama:

TWO hours of absolutely spectular mountains/river continually Blooming!! Blooming!! Blooming!!with seemingly every gorgeous flowering/color changing tree native to Japan (except Cherry Blossoms?). RAIN in the hot springs town of Yakahama which did not stop all my tour colleagues from energetically- with focused purpose- exploring the town, the local outdoor markets and merchants; I stayed snug at the Roykan and and indulged myself in bubbling, steaming hot tubs--soothing my deprived, sibaretic soul. EIGHT course traditional Japanese dinner and tatami mats for sleeping made for a perfect Japanese experience.

Day 6-Wednesday, November 12: Morning rain did not deter my enthsiastic and determined colleagues from "buying out" the kimono goodies of a small village shop. They hit (figuratively, of course) the $100,000 jack-pots kimonos..kimonos..kimonos all compelling and wonderful
Then: Afternoon TRAIN to Tokyo with two hours of glorious mountain foliage again.

The Buddha was smiling on us.

Quilt/Stash Project-2020... NOTHING TO REPORT &^%$%^&*..LIFE HAPPENING!!

JAPAN TOUR.....TRAVELING TOGETHER (www.TravelingTogether.net) November 6-15-2009.

As reported previously....Friday 11/6 was a traveling day; Saturday 11/7 was a fabric shopping splurge for most...and the Handcraft Center morning for me....with afternoon free and dinner at fantastic Orizzonte with fabulous views of Kyoto.

Sunday 11/8 was full day tours of Kyoto and Nara..

In Kyoto we saw The Golden Pavilion-Rokuon-ji Temple (www.kinkaku-ji.or.jp) and the Kyoto Imperial Palace (website address not available).

In Nara we saw--along with 10,000-15,000 others the famous TODAI-JI Temple (www.todaiji.or.jp) and a near by Shinto shrine (name to come).

Not on the Quilt Tour tour..and NOT TO BE MISSED IN KYOTO....

National Treasure: Sanjusangen-do--1001 golden Buddhas 124 of which were made in 1164 when the Temple was founded and 876 completed in 1266....with his 28 guardian gods.

I experienced the gift of this spectactular place with professional friends and collegues from my 12 years working in Japan 1993-2005.

Then as previously reported.. Monday, November 9--"officially" day 4 of the tour-- was the very special Yuzen Dyeing Museum ( www.kodaiyuzen.co.jp) and the meeting with the Kyoto Quilting Group...hosted by master quilter Keiko Takahashi.

Next.--Coming..the very...very special adventure/experience of mountain train journey..AND TAKAYAMA...

I WILL KEEP YOU ANTISCIPATING THAT REPORT.

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--REPORT

Life Happens--AGAIN,,,and thoughts/plans to quilt-quilt-quilt on Thanksgiving and yesterday to finish the "PinkFan/Star" ("Japanese" fabric quilt in the "unfinished" quilt drawer for at least six years) were not possible...just not possible!! The new backing and binding fabric ($6.45) is still in original wrapping--untouched. Well....maybe next week???Yes!! Determined!!

Then--JAPAN

DAY 3 OF TOUR

Morning: The Yuzen Dyeing Museum ( www.kodaiyuzen.co.jp) where we saw kimonos of handpainted fabric hundreds of years old; and learned the Yuzen stencil dyeing process by hand stenciling a handkerchief with a traditional Japanese pattern. Despite the teacher's frustration with my "dark" non-traditional layering of the paint, I like MY results and stencil-pattern at lot--I will frame the small square of "flowers".

In the super lovely gift shop I bought a red-and- purple fan-and- flowers glasses case--bargain at about $12.....so for the extended future I will have special good reminder of this experience at least 5-10 times a day?

Afternoon: Meeting with a local quilting group for cake-coffee and show and tell. The welcoming-super nice "regular "Japanese quilting ladies made extraordinary--EXTRAORDINARY!! quilts--both in the original designs....and in the quilting skills and techniques--not possible to describe to do them justice.

Well..more of "life happening" today and tomorrow--"Pink Fan/Stars" waiting; next week???

Quilt/Stash Project-2020 and JAPAN

small VICTORY--BACK ON TRACK...

10th day home...and finally life is getting back to regular "normal"...so managed to drive the 10 miles north on the 10 lane highway to the two nearest quilt shops--one a Ben Franklin--amazingly good and well stocked,,,and an lovely independent quilt store near by.

And....I bought fabric to complete backing...and a glowing gold orange/red Japanese fabric for binding. Total cost $6.45...so the "Pink Fan/Star Quilt in the "unfinished" drawer for at least six years......WILL be completed......

Thanksgiving will be a quiet day for me this year...so I will sew..and sew..and sew.

Then...the adventure of using the fabric acutally bought in Japan...and that is another story for another day.

Report--
Quilt Tour to Japan

13 quilters from all over the United States..an American tour guide...and a Japanese quilter interpreter/translator guide. We arrived variously in Kyoto on Friday, November 6.and gathered at 8 a.m. Saturday morning for...what else? a excursion to a fabric store on a major shopping street about 6 blocks from the hotel..

Most of my companions bought fabric..bought fabric..bought fabric.....I was overwhemed and restrained.....really nothing appealing to me..and I had "only" a carry -on suitcase..which had to accomodate EVERYTHING purchased.

Four of us decided to abandon the fabric shopping and go to the acclaimed HANDCRAFT CENTER--good decision for us...we spend 2 happy hours investigating the many many special authentic Japanese goodies that 7 floors provide--I could easily have spent $15,000; the afternoon was free-I read and slept....

The evening gathering at the Orizzonte buffet resturant on top floor of the near by Kyoto Hotel was a special exciting 'winner"--SPECTACTULAR VIEWS OF THE RIVER AND THE CITY...and good food...what more can anyone ask for the beginning of any adventure????

Three days in Kyoto/Nara....and that is for another day...

Library closed Thanksgiving and Friday 11/26-27 MAYBE by Saturday the "Pink Fan/Star" will be finished... yes!! Celebration!!

Thursday, November 19, 2009....Week 15---Blog 24--Day 98 of 4,014

Home--JAPAN--Project

Home after 16 days in Japan..for work...and a quilting tour with the highlight the quilt show: International Quilt Week in Yokohoma.

Still some jet lagged...so organizing my thought and reporting on the quilt tour will come in following days/weeks.

For today....

....getting started blogging again..my hopes to blog while in Japan did not happen--just too complicated.

...and Quilting/Stash Project 2020.....

complete all unfinshed quilts....use all scraps and stash to zero by 2020

When I left October 31 there were two unfinshed quilts shouting for my attention:

1) Lorraine Torrence designed..nine 15x15 finished blocks with Hawaian themed fabric made at Empty Spools Seminars in 2002......of yes!! 2002 and

2) an American/Japanese "PinkFan" themed fabric 35x45 inch quilt top designed by ME.

Now,of course?, it is clear...The Japanese quilt gets first priority...even though it does require buying new fabric for the backing and binding..and a trip to a rather distant quilt store..

I did buy..and was given..authentic Japanese fabric....although I did manage to be restrained and focused.....my tour companions went wild--filling suitcase(s).

...so the next weeks and months will be focued on making "Japanese" quilts......all 'small' wall hangings....

...and I will be "reporting" on the various adventures and experiences of the Japan trip.

Yea! need to get myself fully here..and my thoughts..and my ordinary life "organized".

Traveling Together does a terrific quilt tour..check out their quilting program for 2010--Ireland-North Carolina anyone?? www.TravelingTogether.net

Wednesday, October 28,2009....Week 12---Blog 23--Day 76 of 4,014

Jean Wells design/inspired scrap quilt finished!!!!

Not lovely-beautiful..but somehow interesting and appealing. Maybe..just maybe... this will be the first of the Puppy Quilts..Remember the Glenn Close/Oprah Winfrey project of incarcerated people raising puppies to be given to disabled veterans???

New information is that such a project exists at San Quentin..the California State prison..on San Francisco Bay..since that is near home, I will check-out when I return from Japan.

But..then...I will certainly have to have pictures of quilts on this blog...and a contest...to determine just what breed of puppie "goes-with this quilt....it is not "cute'.

Shouting from the "unfinished quilts"/stash drawer demanding-competing for my attention:

1. Nine 15x15 finished blocks..with wonderful Hawaii themed fabric made at Empty Spools Seminars in 2002...design by Lorraine Torrence (Seattle)...yes!!! 2002..oh dear!!!

2. A 35 x 45 inch quilt top with American/Japanese "Pink Fan" theme fabric with complicated deep purple and orange stars--design by: Determined Quilter...me!!!

The 'problem with both the blocks and the top is that new fabric will have to be bought to complete......and I have been wanting to avoid that...and yes!!! use the scraps and stash first.

..and...those projects are compelling......

..and those are decisions for after Japan.

O.K. again..I hope to blog from Japan beginning November 5....

SCRAPS AND STASH

*&^&*)(*!! Life happening again...nothing interesting or special--time consuming, boring ordinary hassles...and necessary to deal with and solve.

....and still..some progress to report; but not on the scrap quilt based on the Jean Wells design mentioned last in Blog 20. The scrap backing is now 95% finished.

Perhaps there will be some time for sewing this week..and..the main focus of time and energy is preparing for departure on 10/31 for the working and the Jokohoma Quilt Show/quilting tour to Japan.

Scraps and Stash...comments:

MY definitions:

STASH: all the pieces of "wonderful" fabric that could not be passed up when brousing quilt shops.

Professional quilters seem to delight and treasure and seem joyfully proud of their stash--for example, reference pictures "Collaborative Quilting"(2006) by Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston......

Good for them!!! for me this Stash fabric is a "burden"....

SCRAPS: odd remenent pieces of fabric left over from completed quilts. Scraps are both a burden and a challenge for me....what to do with them????

......why can't I just throw away????

...and, I am determined...both with Stash and Scraps......

yes..patience..patience patience...and creative challenge...

and...a happy report..Since August 14,2009 when this project and blog started I have..ACTUALLY, completed 10 wall hangings....

I hope to blog from Japan...now THAT will be a challenge.

Happy quilting..

Wednesday, October 14,2009.....Week 10--Blog 20---Day 62 of 4,014

A quickie today...

Yesterday, Tuesday, October 13 the first big California storm of the season--rain!!!rain!!!rain!! wind!!!wind!!! wind!!!--an absolutely guilt free quilting day....

and a "demanding job"--using scraps, scraps, scraps and more scraps to complete the backing for the 39x32 inch scrap quilt based on the Jean Wells design mentioned Monday.

The back now 90% finished.....lots of "creative/inventive'" piecing.

Will it be wonderful??? Probably not...who could/would want it???

But!!! some psychic itch will be satisfied...and I will be fulfilling my goal of zero scraps/stash by 2020.

( Maybe this will be the first of the Puppy Quilts.....featured on Oprah with Glenn Close this spring/summer..a project where prisoners raise puppies and then those puppies go to disabled veterans..--yes!!-- a worthy cause...and more about that another time.)

Monday, October 12,2009......Week 10-Blog 19---Day 60 of 4014

Well..again Life Happens....and I have not blogged for a week--October 5.

Amazingly, however, much accomplished in the finish-stash-scraps project.

First I found super good, bright pink-red dottie fabric at Jo Ann, a California?? chain fabric and craft store...not my usual/prefered place to shop..probably had not been there for at least 3-4 years.

Now..a blue-black-pink dottie quilt, my original design based on templates from Carol Liebzeit (Empty Spools Seminars-February/March 2005; and Louisa Smith (Empty Sp0ols Seminars--August-September 2005)is complete!

Note: Books--Louisa L.Smith: "Strips 'n Curves-2001" and "A New Twist on Strips 'n Curves-2007 "

Then, as described last Monday, October 5, the four 12x12 inch quilt blocks inspired by Jean Wells design that "shouted-demanded" my attention. The fabric in those blocks have scrap fabric dating back to my quilting beginning in 1997. so 12 years---.unbelievable..yes??

Now!! I have completed 39x 32 inch quilt top using more 'ancient' scraps and scraps.

( Yes... I do hope to achieve the knowledge and competence to get pictures of the completed quilts on this blog soon...but realistically probably not until after I return from Yokohoma Quilt Show in Japan on November 15.) ( And..yes I do hope I can/will blog about the quilting tour..show anbd other adventures in Japan.)

Big rain predicted for tonight/tomorrow...so an absolutly guilt free quilting day..Yes!!!

Scrap/Stash Wonders.......Jean Wells....Sisters, Oregon Outdoor Quilt Show

My grandmother was a quilter; I learned to sew beginning in 6th grade, at mandatory Home Ec. classes in Omaha, Nebraska (educating (indoctriating?) girls to become wives, mothers, 'HOMEMAKERS).....well I am forever grateful for that traditional start. I sewed clothes for myself through high school; and made simple garments for my kids when they were little.

I came to quilting "late"---taking my first class at a Community College in the fall of 1997; making my first quilt for a grandaughter's first birthday...I have proud pictures...

..and I have in my scraps still.... fabric from that quilt. oh dear!!!!!

I have written before, how unfinished quilt tops, blocks finshed..but not put together and other random scraps, stash, blocks seem to manifest--shout!!! "do me..do me".

Happened again this past weekend...four blocks, 12x12 inches, "demanded" my attention.

These blocks are a variation of a methodology and design learned in a class with Jean Wells at Empty Spools Seminars in 2001...amazingly, they have fabric from that very first quilt made 12 years ago.

Well..I will use all those scraps.......and completing that quilt will be a challenge...and a relief.

Then Jean Wells.....see: jeanwellsquilts.com....maybe investigate her last book: "Intuitive Color and Design for Quilters".

Jean is a quilter, author, quilt store owner...and creator of the exceptional Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show held every July in Sisters, Oregon.

I have been to Sisters in 2000,2001,2002 for 2-3 days of class and the show...and again in 2005 with the Heritage Tour of Oregon....all happy experiences...

Well..the "ancient" scraps/Wells quilt is now in process--I'll keep you posted.

Happy Quilting..Determined Quilter.

Scraps in the Stash--Seeking Inspiration and Solutions

First --Report...Success!!! The "not-named" Freddy Moran designed "dottie" wall hanging...with the backing and binding from the new fabric--yellow with white dots is finished!!!

The Quilt Angels were with me on Monday when "they" gave me this fabric...it worked! and the quilt-wall hanging looks good.

Then....as every quilter knows, there are two major catagories of stash......

1. "hunks'' of maybe quarter to full yards of fabric bought...and not used in a particular project..or bought in the mind space.."oh--that is wonderful--just have to have it".

2. the small scraps of fabric left over from a quilt project--maybe pretty small 2 x2 inches..1 x 6 inches...but "too good" to throw away.

so...seeking inspriation on "what-to-do" with these small "orphan'" scraps I remembered the Scrap Quilt class I took with Roberta Horton at Empty Spools Seminars (Asilomar-Pacific Grove, California) in 2001....and this lead me to Roberta's 1998 book, "Scrap Quilts-the Art of Making Do" (Amazing!! my super good local library actually has a copy).....well..a couple of possible ideas--and maybe some Follower to this blog will find just the right solution to her/his scrap problem....This investigation lead me to get out my Roberta scrap quilt--not great...and not awful either......so Thanks!! Roberta

Another source of scrap inspriation is my 'dottie' mentor Freddy Moran--whose genius is color, and using litterally hundreds of different fabrics in her quilts....I recommend "Colaborative Quilting" 2006 by Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston....and their idea of a Parts Department (another day to discuss that concept--which unfortunately I have not yet followed).

However....notable in this book are the studios of Freddy and Gwen (again a discussion for another day ) and their cabinets and shelves of "stash"----I would being have serious melt-downs if I had either of those stashs..

Finally for today; in the mail this morning..final information for the November 1-15 quilt-tour/Yokohama Quilt Show trip to Japan.....happy anticipation!!!

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Thursday,October 1,2009..........Day 49 of 4,014

WOW!! Started this project August 14,2009....now October 1...so six weeks...and..today..my first follower.....welcome.....

Brief Report;

1. Aaron's Sweet Dreams finished. It looks good!!! It took super patience to quilt because I decided I would use multi-colored metalic thread. That thread kept breaking-breaking requiring repeated..and repeated re-threading machine..so patience..patience.. patience and it was worth it!!! That little wall hanging sparkles.

2. Then..yesterday I quilted the still not-named Freddy Moran designed yellow-aqua-green "dottie" wall hanging...and I will bind with the new yellow-white dots today.

3. On the design board..almost complete another "dottie" wall hanging with still more dottie fabric from that 2006 Freddy Moran class at Empty Spools Seminars (Asilomar-Pacific Grove, California)..this is a creative challenge..because the fabric stash in compatible colors is small..and I am determined to only buy new fabric when absolutely necessary..

That stash must go..

..the up side....mental challenges keeps the dendrites growing..yes???

4. then...for today...another small "Japanese"-American stash of four fabrics....on a chest top..wispering wispering.."do me"-"do me'- ..this will be a challenge also..because. of the limited fabric.

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Tuesday, September 29,2009.....Day 47 of 4,014

Four days since last blog...and..yes!!! still accomplishing...

Quilting and finding/buying fabric.

I have quilted Aarons's Sweet Dreams (using all scraps from original baby quilt made for Aaron in 2002)....had a traditional bright red fabric with small yellow floowers that worked for the backing...and.no "right" binding fabric....

so....shopping necessary...and found!!! spent $2.74 for quarter yard..

Aslo during the shopping trip yesterday...2 quilt stores... I looked for and could not find the additional needed fabric to complete the backing and binding of the (Japanese-American) Fans and Stars quilt....

However..unexpected success:

At Empty Spools Seminars in April 2006 I took Freddy Moran's class, "Going Dottie".I made several wall hangings..in very diverse color combinations..and in various circle patterns...This particular 26x 21 inch wall hanging in shades of "dottie" yellow-aqua-green fabrics was made with Freddy's pattern and templates....

absolutely no..no..fabrics in the stash would complement..none.....so new fabric necessary...and I found......yellow with white dots......

so now on priority agenda...quilting and binding.....(still working on the appropriate name for this quilt)

So..yes!!! moving ahead....

And...frustrating!!...still not able to finding the "right" method of getting the finished quilts photographed..and on this blog....

I am working on it!!!

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Thursday, September 24,2009.....Dayn 42 of 4,014

Goals of Quilt/Stash Project-2020

by August 14, 2020 (10 years-10 months)

1. Complete all unfinished quilt tops

2.Get stash to zero

3. Blog adventures and progress

Reporting: after 42 days amazing??..well..encouraging progress which I will review and confirm another day.

However, Reality checks:

1. I do not (cannot?) quilt at least one hour every day...because--life happens--

The good news: I have had..and certainly will have days... when I am inspired (driven?) to quilt for several hours.

2. I do not (cannot?) blog every day..again, because--life happens and I just do not-can not get to the library.

3. The stash does not provide the "right' even the just o.k. fabric for completing the quilt top and/or for piecing the backing..or for the binding.

Thus it is necessary to buy new fabric.

For example: I have creatively used every piece of scrap and compatable stash fabric to make the backing for the (American-Japanese) Fans and Stars quilt.

I now need half to three-quarters yards to complete the backing and the binding.

Well..maybe selecting/buying this new fabric will be fun.

Experience (theories) on backing)

1. Traditional: one single piece of compatible/contrasting/dramatic fabric

2.Determined Quilter's usual choice: use as much of the scrap from the original quilt fabrics as possible in spontaneous/creative ways with the goal of using all.....

and,,, to use as many compatible stash fabrics as possible to reduce stash/scrap inventory.

3. I have been quilting now for 13 years and, having made maybe 30 full size quilts and another 30 wall hangings, of various sizes, I have made backings all ways.

Sort-of unbelievable to me now....my very first full size bed quilt, made for my oldest son, was actually two complete quilt tops.......and hand quilted...(one year on the dining room table for that).....what we do for ignorance/tradition?/.....love...

Happy Quilting...Determined Quilter.

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Tuesday,September 22,2009.....Day 40 of 4,014

Expressions--Osaka Memories I--2003

Oregon Gold---2006

Aaron's 'Sweet Dreams--2002

Fans and Stars--2002

Well..again...6 days since I last blogged... and the good news is that I have been super productive.

First.....sitting in my almost finished quilt drawer---Osaka Memories I--2003

I started working about 60 days a year in Japan in spring of 1993..... in 2003 colleagues gave me a special gift of three half/yards of Japanese fabric.....and I went to work...Oska Memories I and II were completed that year..except..except #I never got a binding....

This week in my stash I found..not perfect..but certainly very o.k. dark purple batik that worked just fine for the binding.....and...and.. I also used completely that "orphaned' piece of stash fabric..

...so celebration... two Quilt/Stash goals accomplishing: completing one unfinished quilt top--and getting all of one dark purple batik out of the stash.

The third gift fabric from 2003 is more difficult..because of pattern and colors...I return to Osaka in November for a quilting tour..and the Yokohama quilt show (and also some work) and I will hope to find the "just right" complementary fabric to finally complete the Osaka trilogy.

Then I also completed the binding on Oregon Gold..and brilliant--bright orange-gold--black and pink 24x24..wall hanging ...part of a project of "Going Dottie" with Freddy Moran..and an Empty Spools Seminar in April 2006.

Knowing I was going to be "going dottie" with Freddy I gave myself a special "project" on the Heritage--"Oregon Gold" trip to Oregon/Sisters Quilt Show in July 2005. On that tour we visited 11 quilt stores....I bought two quarter or half yards of dottie fabric in each store...for 22 pieces of dottie fabric....I am working on it still.....reports when success achieved..

Then....somehow...manifesting...saying "make me"...."make me"..were the "scraps". from a baby quilt I made of friend's grandson, Aaron, in spring 2002. I now have a 22/18 Aaron's "Sweet Dreams" quilt..yes!!! using every scrap..every scrap...which I will quilt and bind this week.

Finally..again manifesting from the unfinished quilt blocks drawer....saying.."makeme!!!"make me"!!... the nine 12x12 inch squares of the Fans and Stars quilt,,,American made soft pink Japanese fan fabric...with very American stars of deep purple and orange.... ...Mystery...why in about 2002 did I think this would be a wonderful project??? no matter.. as of today, the top is complete....and I will begin work on the back tomorrow...

...so
Yes!!! I am on a roll.....this quilt/stash project is working!!!...now to get the blogging on a rational/doable schedule.

Enough for today...Happy quilting...Determined Quilter

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Wednesday, September 16, 2009....Day 34 of 4,014

Again..again..best decisions..intentions ..plans interupted by LIFE...

..unfortunately another week since I last blogged....or sewed..

no point in describing boring, complicated situation with house roofing..need to replace hall window and other mundane hassles.....

the hassle most affecting this quilt/stash project was the unexpected malfunction of the sewing machine....and arranging to have the mystery diagnosed by an "expert" which again for a lot of boring complicated reasons did not happen...

Unbelievably...this morning after about an hour of very frustrating work I..I solved the machine malfunction problem.......and my old Singer is working again....

So..after a week of no ability to sew ,I can again continue to complete the unfinshed quilt tops..and use to zero the stash in drawers and boxes...

So..plan for this afternoon...sew the new ($3.00) binding fabric onto the Barcelona Cathedral quilt.....and finally finish that wall hanging....and maybe..maybe....

get on with the "decision" to sew every day...and to report on this blog six days a week...

Hopefully now attention and time can be focused on getting pictures on this blog.

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Wednesday,September 9,2009.....Day 27 of 4,o14

Oh dear!!! one week--7 days since I last quilted or blogged.

Still division of opinion on whether Julie Powell actually did cook/bake and blog every day for her 365 day Julia Child project--if she did she is a special wonder woman.

LIFE and holidays happen..so best decisions and intentions are revised and somtimes actions delayed.

Still..small progress to report: On Saturday, September 5, purchased, by necessity, as absolutely no suitable fabric in my stash, one-quarter yard ($3.00) of black/gold fabric as binding for the Barcelona Cathedral quilt....

and..over the Labor Day weekend I made final payment for the the November 5-15 tour to International Quilt Week-Yokohama, Japan...

well.of course...that doesn't actually advance the Quilt/Stash Project..as I will not be quilting for over two weeks......but...inspiration!!! Yes!!! Yes!! Yes!!

see: http://www.travelingtogether.net/ if you are interested in this trip...they still have space.

and....small advance..I received the "fancy" name labels for the Quilt/StashProject-2020 quilts--and I will sew them on the completed quilts this week..

More disciplined work-quilting-blogging this week...the Fates and LIFE willing.

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Wednesday,September 2,2009....Day 20 of 4,014

Yes!! LIFE HAPPENS..and the best intentions and decisions need to be revised....

Yes!! I had hoped to quilt and blog every day; and to learn the library computer systems in swifty-time....( I am proud of my computer progress--not "perfect" yet..but slowly getting there)

I have been able to quilt....and will, by Friday, September 4, have some happy quilt/stash completion to report.....and I hope serve as an inspiration and example to other quilters who also have lived in frustration with fabric overload.

Roofers pounding all day--the/my brain rebels; tomorrow the bi-monthly meeting of the "We Do It In Secret" Book Club, named for the 9 excellent women on the 2005-2006 XX County, California Civil Grand Jury.

FRiday!!! 4 quilts from 'unfinished quilt tops" draw completed...and the fabric pieces and scraps from originals and those quilts now ZERO....Progress!!

Quilt/Stash Project-2020--Determined Quilter

Monday, August 31, 2009...Day 18 of 4,014

Reality---Revisions and Adjustments

Did Julie Powell actually cook/bake every single day for a year??..or.."only" somehow manage to cook/bake 524 Julia Child recipes in 365 days???

Did Julie Powell actually actually blog every single day for a year about her experiences???

At this moment..answer unknown. However, I started the Quilt/Stash Project-2020 expecting?hoping to emulate that dedicated successful experience: quilt at least one hour every day; blog every day.

Now, after two weeks: REALITY...and more modest goals.

Yes!!! complete all quilts on the design boards on August 14, 2009 and in the "unfinished quilt tops' drawer; and...get the fabric stash to zero by 2020.

Now--Reality: quilt consistently-regularly WHEN life allows

yes!!! blog consistently-regularly WHEN life allows

Report on Progress

90 degree brain sizzling/numbing heat over the weekend--so no quilting

I have changed the mane of my "Medieval Cathedral's' quilt to the more accurately descriptive and evocative for me "Barcelona Cathedrals".

Also, reality--no acceptable binding fabric in the stash, so.... maybe $2.50 for a quarter yard of dramatic black fabric for a WOW finish.

Quilt/StashProject-2020--Determined QuilterSaturday, August 29,2009

Saturday, August 29,2009.....Day 16 of 4,014

Two weeks of challenge...Four separate Work(S) in Progress

Yes 4---four--- separate challenging projects

1. The Quilt/Stash Project-2020 which is the completing of all quilts now on the design walls and in the "unfinished quilt tops" drawer...and getting the fabric stash to zero; and quilting at least one hour a day.

well...I am not sure if Julie powell really did cook/bake every day for 365 consecutive days in order to complete the 524 recepies in Julia Childs book...however, I have discovered that the "one hour every day" might not be doable because: LIFE HAPPENS.... so at least one hour a day a goal...and making-up for "lost' hours/days by quilting 3-4-5 hours on a single day as compensation...or just pure pleasure.

2. Learning this art of blogging...and writing every day? Again did Julie Powell actually blog every day??? In my two weeks I have also learned that blogging every day is a goal not a possible reality.....again: LIFE HAPPENS.

3.The third demanding challenge has been learning the complexities of using a library computer--well actually a computer of any kind. Amazingly--to me--I have and am doing it!!...more of that later.

4.Finally, learning how to get picutres of my completed quilts on this blogg; today still a dep mystery--and--an interesting challenge.

So Never On Sunday--the/my fates cooperating blogging again on Monday.

Quilt/StashProject-2020--Determined Quilter

Thursday,August 26,2009......Day 14 of 4,014

Super productive day yesterday (no blogging) about 6 hours of quilting-- piecing the backing of the "Medival Cathedrals" (28x28) quilt ; the quilt top started and completed in a 2 day class in conjunction with the Sisters, Oregon Outdoor Quilt show in July, 2002. Yes!! SEVEN (7) years ago.

This quilt has dramatic colors of orange-red-black; the very best rewarding/satisfying outcome: I actually used, to the very last-tiny scrap all of the original fabrics..and..most of an additional gorgeous black-orange-red complementary/enhansing fabric from my stash boxes..

Surprisingly, the backing of this quilt is now even more arresting and dramatic that the top-- Yes!! I am good!!!

..and I am accomplishing my goal of using my stash to zero by 2020.

Quilting today!!!!!

Then......a Reality Revelation (of course..of course...at some deep (?) subconscious level I have always known ) some of my unfinished quilt tops cannot be completed from the stash....and..

The reason is simple: there are absolutly no compatible fabrics of any size or amount in the stash.

So now I accept that I must/will have a To-Be-Delayed drawer......for those finished quilt tops that require new fabric (thus new purchases).

As of today, August 26, 2009 thre are 2 quilt tops for the To-Be-Delayed drawer:

1. Sylvia Einstein design--"intersecting" circles ( www.sylviaeinstein.com) top completed at Empty Sools Seminars--2008

2. My unnamed "Hawaii" themed top--the original design by Lorraine Torrence (Multi-View Images) completed at Empty Spools Seminars in 2002..oh dear..there is that year 2002 again..

Unfortunate no internet address for Lorraine.....happy search...

Tuesday, August 24, 2009

12th day of Quilt/Stash Project--2020--Design Wall Progress

When Quilt/Stash Project-2020 and this blog began on August 14, 2009 there were 5 pieces on my design walls (yea..I have 3 separate walls):

...a Reynola Pakusich designed finished quilt top; a Sylvia Einstein inspired finished quilt top;an almost finished (80 plus pieces) backing for a Kaffe Fassett design which I have named "Monet Garden" (Kaffe has other names for his quilts of this design); and two beginning small quilt tops (potential wall hangings) from multiple and diverse fabric scraps left over from other quilts.

Today--August 23, 2009

... off the design walls: 1) Completely completed- "Dotting Circles" my name for the Reynola Pakusich designed wall hanging; 2) the two small 'scrape" quilt tops--one used as the backing for my "Victoria Sunset" quilt now completed, the other put away in an individual work-in-progress plastic envelope and "filed' in a drawer.

...still on design walls: 1) almost finished backing for "Monet Garden"; and 2) unnamed Sylvia Einstein designed quilt. This quilt last quilt is a dilema as there are no suitable, color- right fabrics in my stash. I have "vowed' to myself not to buy new fabric until stash is zero (well?)

So to be considered-resolved-- the question: buy--not buy new fabric?, even with carefully measuring for sure to create more stash.

Fortunately, that question can be deliberated and postponed for another day.

Unfortuantely, the original design name, designer name and teacher's name lost from my records.... the top is interesting, complicated, time consuming piecing...and the baccking with left-over fabric is a challenge...my colors: vibrant orange-red-black.. yes..again I hope to manage pictures soon.

Getting Started-August14,2009

Getting Started

So.....today it begins.........

Quilt/Stash Project-2000....and this blog..

Inspiration:

On August 9,2009 I saw the movie."Julie and Julia"with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, relating the true life stories of cooking legend Julia Childes and Julie Powell. Powell is in an almost-thirty-and-have-done-nothing-with-my-life meltdown and decides to make all 524 recipes in Child's famous book on French cooking within one year (365 days) and..to write a daily blog report on her experiences.

My "crisis' is not a personal angst..rather it is the stash of perfectly good left over fabric from 13 years of quilting...and what to do with it--and...unfinished quilts now numbering about 15.

Following the Powell model/inspiration I have decided to commit to at least one (1) hour of "quilting" every day until that stash is zero.....and all unfinished quilts are completed....or..it is August 1, 2020........

..and to report my progress and adventures daily (except Sundays) in this blog.

Currently, I have on my design walls five quilt tops almost completed..and now almost ready for backing and quilting; at least ten various size wall hangings in a drawer all needing backing and quilting; and on the studio floor nine 15 x 15 patches--the unfinished quilt top of a Lorraine Torrence design started at the week long Empty Spools Seminars-Asilomar, Pacific Grove, California in March 2002..yes!!! 2002.

...and, of course, the boxes and drawers of fabric...

Obviously..this unfinished quilts..and fabric stash 'crisis' deserves and needs attention...however long it takes to complete.

In addition, i will write about my experiences with over 20 exceptional and gifted teachers...and my quilt tour/quilt show adventures..

So..Day 1--Friday, August 14,2009

Today I have completed piecing the backing of a small 19x23 inch design by Reynola Pakusich, "overlapping Circles" (Empty spools Seminars-Asilomar, Pacific Grove California-March-2009) and will begin the machine quilting.

Reynola's sample quilt is flowers and a geometric pattern..mine is dotty fabrics in maroon-purple-blue.

(I hope to have pictures posted here soon.)

To see Reynola's work: http://www.reynola.com/

For Empty spools Seminars: http://www.emptyspoolsseminars.com/

Yes!!!at least 1 hour a day!!! (4,014 days to go)

and..of course all comments welcome
